Acne Pregnancy Issues
Just as there are certain hormonal changes to the body during puberty, there are also major hormonal changes during pregnancy. These changes tend to encourage the extra production of natural oils which can clog the pores of the skin, causing acne pregnancy.
It is very difficult to predict acne pregnancy outbreaks since each woman’s hormonal balance is different. In some cases, women who had acne prior to pregnancy may unfortunately get worse acne, or they may actually see their skin clear up when they become pregnant. On the other hand, women whose skin was clear prior to pregnancy may have acne outbreaks when they become pregnant.
The good news is that this is usually a temporary situation and clears up as the pregnancy develops. Acne pregnancy usually happens during the first trimester, and for many of these women after the initial hormone changes stabilize, the acne will tend to totally disappear within a couple of months after giving birth. Treatment during this period is probably safest if it is limited to washing at least 3 times a day with a gentle oil-free, fragrance-free cleanser.
This isn’t the case for all women, however. Acne pregnancy doesn’t always go away after the pregnancy. So what can be done?
First of all, if you are thinking about taking any over the counter medication, or even an over the counter natural acne remedy, you should see your doctor first. Medications and so-called “natural” remedies that are taken internally may have adverse effects for the fetus. Even certain topical treatments – treatments applied externally to the affected area – may possibly enter the bloodstream. Why not be sure before you use them?
The next logical question is: can acne pregnancy be avoided prior to the pregnancy? Probably not, according to most experts. Each woman’s hormonal balance is unpredictable when pregnancy occurs, and there is no known preventive technique, other than a common sense health regimen. This would include moderate exercise, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and drinking lots of water. This last item has the effect of diluting the skin oils secreted in the first trimester.
